Chemung County's most famous
attribute is American humorist Mark Twain. Each year Twain's life and
works are celebrated at the Domes at Mark Twain State Park in an
extravaganza of song and dance known as the Mark Twain Musical Drama.
Visitors can also see
the Mark Twain Study, an octagonal shaped structure on the
Elmira College

campus where he wrote "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" and other
works. Local museums also include the Arnot Art Museum, Chemung County
Historical Society, National Soaring Museum
and others.
There's also the Clemens
Center, the Elmira Pioneers professional baseball team, Tanglewood
Nature Center, the Samuel Clemens Performing Arts Center, Corning
Glass Center, the Steuben Glass Factory and Museum of Glass, and Hall
of Science and Industry.
Some of the finest wineries in the
country are also found in the Bath-Hammondsport area. You can also
enjoy village festivals, firemen's field days, carnivals, the nation's
oldest county fair, country and western music jamboree, stock car
racing, motorcycle hill climbing, wine festivals, art and craft shows,
flea markets and more.
Elmira College, founded in 1855, was the first in the nation to confer
degrees to women equal to those awarded men. It is a 4-year learning
center with emphasis on liberal arts and professional programs.
Vocational training is provided by SCT-BOCES, a 3-county institution.
There are exceptional educational opportunities within the region. For the
college bound, a broad array of courses and degree programs are available from
outstanding institutions such as Cornell University, Alfred University,
Mansfield University
